In the two years since its inception, the Surrey Volunteer Development Programme has enabled more than 50 FE & HE students to deliver over 3000 hours of coaching to nearly 3500 children across the county.
The runaway success of the programme this season has meant that for next season the programme will be revamped and potential participants will be invited to apply for a place on the programme, which is expected to be oversubscribed.
Participants receive Nike RFU-branded kit to wear while delivering. They receive free RFU coaching courses and access to exclusive opportunities which are impossible or hard to come by otherwise: examples this year include chances to work for Harlequins and at international matches at Twickenham as well as other rugby-related vocational training opportunities. In return, participants donate a couple of hours of their time a week to coach in local schools or at local clubs and occasionally to assist at Surrey and RFU events.
